AFMR Endowment
Fellowship of the American Federation of Medical Research (FAFMR)

Fellowship of the American Federation for Medical Research (FAFMR) provides a means to recognize outstanding contributions in research, leadership, volunteer activities and service within the AFMR, and is reserved for physicians, medical scientists and researchers who excel in these fields, within the organization’s interests and whose accomplishments support the stated objectives of the AFMR.

The special recognition conferred by the FAMFR status provides opportunities and expectations of visible, significant involvement and engagement in various activities of the AFMR, such as its scientific meetings, conferences and presentations, administrative involvement, mentorship and coaching, advocacy, advertising and marketing activities, and ongoing support of the organization and its membership.

ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for consideration for an AFMR Fellowship the candidate:

  1. must have been an Active/Emeritus member of the AFMR for at least 2 (two) consecutive years or 3 (three) cumulative, non-consecutive years; and
  2. must be an AFMR member in good standing (dues up to date) at the time of the fellowship application deadline. You may go online to renew your Membership.
CRITERIA
The selection criteria are established by the AFMR Membership Committee and approved by the AFMR National Council. The candidates must be able to show significant, independent contributions in the fields of basic science, clinical and translational research or in other relevant disciplines (e.g., quality improvement, implementation and dissemination science, etc). In addition, the candidates must show evidence of significant volunteer involvement and service to the AFMR. Significant, current or past service to the AFMR will be evaluated by AFMR Membership Committee both qualitatively and quantitatively using a point-based system, which considers:
  1. leadership activities;
  2. involvement in national or regional councils, national, regional and/or local activities;
  3. active participation on committees, boards, and task forces;
  4. advocacy efforts;
  5. professional and lay education programs, including writing groups, abstract grading, speakers’ bureau; and research grant peer review;
  6. mentoring and coaching activities.
Note: Attending or presenting at AFMR meetings or other AFMR- sponsored conferences and events is not considered significant volunteer service.

APPLICATION SUBMISSION and DEADLINES
The AFMR Membership Committee considers applications for AFMR Fellowship during the spring and fall of each year. Applications must be received through the AFMR Awards Application System by 5 p.m. Central Time of the announced day. Applications received after the deadline dates will be held until the next review cycle.

HOW TO APPLY
To apply for FAFMR status, candidates must follow the procedures below:

  • Self-nominations are acceptable.
  • Identify an active AFMR Member to serve as a sponsor.
  • Complete all sections of the application. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Attach the documentation outlined in a single PDF document. Applications that do not include the required documents will be considered incomplete and will not be considered:
    • An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (CV);
    • Complete bibliography;
    • A letter of recommendation from the sponsor. The letter must be written on business letterhead, signed by the sponsor, and must clearly articulate how the candidate meets eligibility criteria.
    • Headshot. Please note that submitting a headshot is optional and may be used to recognize elected FAFMR on the society’s website.

REVIEW and ELECTION PROCESS
The AFMR Membership Committee reviews the applications and evaluates the candidates on biannual basis, using approved selection criteria. The list of approved candidates is submitted by the Membership Committee to the AFMR National Council for final approval at the next Council business meeting. Following their approval in the AFMR National Council meeting, elected Fellows receive a Certificate of Fellowship.

To maintain the FAFMR designation, one must pay membership dues annually; if a lapse in membership of more than 12 months occurs, one must re-apply.
